It has become a common rule for us to watch out for our cholesterol levels. Our doctors kept on advising to avoid too much cholesterol intake as it is bad for our health. However, only a few are fully able to understand the concept behind cholesterol as a substance and its relationship with absolute health improvement.

Cholesterol is a substance which actually provides health promotion when intake is properly monitored. Cholesterol is needed for our cells to function well. For instance, our brain cells, or neurons, need cholesterol to effectively transmit signals through the synapses. If you have lower cholesterol levels in your body and brain, it is most certain that you have a bad memory as well. In relation to this, cholesterol also improves the process of learning. In general, cholesterol is not bad for our health. They are essential for our body to function properly.

If this is the case, how is cholesterol bad for our health?

For starters, if too much amount of cholesterol gets in to our blood stream, it will serve as a trigger for life threatening diseases to occur, such as heart and blood vessel-related diseases. We can find cholesterol in some foods, but majority of them are in eggs and shellfish. You can also check for the nutrition facts label found in every food you purchase in super markets. Try to read the amount of saturated fats present in the food. The higher the amount of saturated fats also means there is a high amount of cholesterol. This is because when we take in saturated fats, the liver will turn them into cholesterol.

The total daily intake of cholesterol varies from person to person. When you love eating eggs, it does not mean you will acquire heart diseases right away. Family history for this type of disease is also relative to the risk and probability. Moreover, the cholesterol as a substance is not the one at fault. It is the different type of cholesterol that needs to be evaluated in relation to intake and percentage values.

This goes down to the matter about lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are the one that carry cholesterol through the bloodstream. These are the LDL or low-density lipoprotein, the HDL or high-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. The low-density lipoproteins are considered as the bad cholesterol, whereas the high-density lipoprotein is considered as the good ones. Individuals who have high levels of LDL’s and low levels of HDL’s are being advised to watch out for the possibility of acquiring heart diseases.
